I asked Natalie why she wanted to take nude photographs of herself. “The importance in having nudity, is the relationship with accepting sexuality as well as self worth. I dreaded having to be so vulnerable to myself and someone else- when I was, I didn’t always understand that it is okay to want to feel special, exciting, pretty, mysterious, emotional or sexual. It was easier to shut those feelings off. I would say the importance or relevance is closely tied with a "rebirth" or regeneration of love for myself.”

Running On Empty: Freedom & Enable
“After your mother found the guarana pills, you looked them up and talked about the potential side effects and mechanism of action together. Initially, you felt that guarana would give you freedom and enable you to be more relaxed and enjoy eating and food. It seemed that guarana could work as a safety net, You were hopeful that it might quiet feelings which interferes with your ability to eat, and quiet the urge to vomit.”
From the "Running On Empty" story.
"Growing up in northern California, I noticed a parallel between fearlessness in the water and fearlessness on land. A lot of the big wave guys I grew up idolizing were notorious for getting into serious shit—meth, drunk driving accidents, just general mayhem. As the son of a psychologist, I began to wonder if there was something about the brains of these people that drove this behavior. I took my first research job in San Diego in 2009 and though the place has changed, my questions are still the same. I’m still looking for the biological reasons for risky behavior. I’ve learned a lot, but most of my questions are still unanswered and that lack of knowledge keeps me motivated." - Michael Barrus
UPDATE: Here’s another photo of the pup we found dieing on the street. The lady who’s car this is drove her to the vet. Once she found out the pup wouldn’t live, they had her deflead, washed, held, and loved before putting her down. They lady and her two little girls gave her a traditional burial in front of their house.
I met up with the editor of LaterMag in Mexico, and did an interview about my trip, my nudity, and my photography.
LaterMag is a behind the scenes, reality, surf magazine. Where surfing takes a backseat and the travel tales come out rawer then the rest. No sprinkles, and sparkles with these guys. Just the way I like it.
I came across a pup on the street staring at the pavement blankly. I bought it 2 pesos worth of dog food and tried to feed it some water, but she wouldn’t take. The pup was full of fleas and ticks and looked like it was blind. With some help, my girlfriend and I asked someone walking past to drive her to a vet in a nearby town. She tried to get out of the car, but her legs gave out, forcing her jaw into the curb. Yesterday we heard from the driver the dog had a neurological disease and had to be put down.
When death lingers, is it appropriate to take photos of a subject for photojournalism sake?
